REASONS FOUNDED

  • The ruler at the time had just been converted to Catholicism.
  • He wanted a haven from religious persecution & he thought Maryland would be good for his "Land of Sanctuary"
  • So it was good for people seeking religious and political freedom.

PEOPLE IN THE COLONY

  • Most settlers were catholic.
  • Each settler was granted 100 acres & if he had a wife or child over the age of 16 they received another 100 acres for each or them, but if the child was under 16 he got 50 acres.
  • Servants were given 50 acres after they received freedom.

CLIMATE & GEOGRAPHY OF THE LAND

  • Maryland was on both sides of the Chesapeake bay, which is the biggest bay in the U. S.
  • The surrounding land was low & fertile, it also was covered with silt because it was right next to a bay.
  • The winters were cold with rain & some snow.
  • Summers were hot & humid.

ECONOMY OF THE COLONY

  • Colonists made a living off of farming.
  • They farmed flax(to make cloths), corn, wheat, and other grains, vegetables, tobacco, & fruit trees.
  • They also did the lumber business, shipping, fishing, & raised cattle for milk & meat.
  • Lastly some colonists mined for iron that got sent to England and manufactured to finished goods.

POLITICS & GOVERNMENT OF THE COLONY

  • Maryland was not connected to England's rules & governing so colonists were allowed to govern themselves.
  • Free men elected representatives to govern the colony & owed their loyalty to Calvert, not the king.
