MATH MAJORS & THEIR ALLIES

POLL

  • We polled the math students for the fall 2013 school year
  • We received some great ideas about how to attract women to math classes,
  • Support the math and math related majors (like Econ),
  • how to increase class participation, and reduce stress.

WORK

  • According to our poll the average number of hours per week:
  • Homework: 11.35 hours
  • Non-homework related studying: 5.45 hours

TECH

  • We asked:
  • "how happy are you with the amount of tech used in classes?"
  • Students response:
  • 22.22% Not Happy, 33.33% Somewhat Unhappy
  • 33.33% Somewhat Happy, 11.11% Happy

EASY FIXES:

  • Replace old white board in math lab with board from basement
  • Install the matlab programs in the new math lab
  • Allow key access to rooms with chalkboards on nights and weekends
  • Cleanup CPM! (It's super dusty and smells a bit)
  • Seriously it hasn't been cleaned since the 60's

  • Grad school studies in math by the current program?
  • What would you change if you could?
  • Students: students wished for more classes, MATLAB supplements, Latex requirements,
  • Most felt partially prepared at best for grad school and life after graduation
  • Most students wanted to make math more accessible, and appealing to those outside the major.

OVERALL STUDENTS WERE POSITIVE ABOUT THIER INSTRUCTORS

BUT FELT BOTH STAFF AND STUDENTS WERE UNSUPPORTED.
