PRESENTATION OUTLINE

ARITHMETIC SEQUENCE

Us a sequence of numbers such that the difference between the consecutive terms is constant.

DEPENDRNT VARIABLE

a variable (often denoted by y ) whose value depends on that of another.

FUNCTION

a relationship or expression involving one or more variables.

FUNCTION RULE

where you express the dependent variable, y, in terms of the independent variable, x.

FUNCTION TABLE

is a table that describes a function by displaying inputs and corresponding outputs in tabular form.

GEOMETRIC SEQUENCE

is a sequence of numbers where each term after the first is found by multiplying the previous one by a fixed, non-zero number called the common ratio.

INDEPENDENT VARIABLE

a variable (often denoted by x ) whose variation does not depend on that of another.

INEQUALITY

the relation between two expressions that are not equal, employing a sign such as ≠ “not equal to,” > “greater than,” or

LINEAR FUNCTION

has one independent variable and one dependent variable. The independent variable is x and the dependent variable is y.

SEQUENCE

is an enumerated collection of objects in which repetitions are allowed. Like a set, it contains members (also called elements, or terms). The number of elements (possibly infinite) is called the length of the sequence.

TERM

is either a single number or variable, or numbers and variables multiplied together. Terms are separated by + or − signs.
