Gira-Sol

Turn towards the sun
As you can imagine, sunflowers aren’t a native species of Cantabria – but Gaudi used them as a sort of code, one that his client would understand and appreciate. You see, the word ‘sunflower’ in Spanish is ‘gira-sol’ meaning ‘to turn towards the sun’. And that’s what this house does. Gaudi took his client’s bachelor lifestyle into account and designed a unique space that was perfect for his needs.

It was originally commissioned to another architect, and the project looked like this. Gaudi participated to the inauguration never thinking it would be further assigned to him!

Structural, functional & decorative Inspiration
Nature has inspired humans in many ways over many centuries. But maybe none match the completeness of Antoni Gaudi’s relationship with nature – Nature as structural, functional, spiritual and decorative inspiration

Parabolas

curve created when we slice a double cone at an angle
The parabola is a curve created when we slice a double cone at an angle. There are other definitions of the parabola, but the definitions of the parabola as a conic section is the easiest to visualize. Gaudi used the parabolic arch to great effect. One of the first times he used the parabolic arch was in his design of the Palau Guell in Barcelona. The entrance gates are in the shape of parabolic arches.
