MATTER STATES

BY: MADDIE MEJIA

MATTER EXISTS IN DIFFERENT

PHYSICAL STATES

Particle arrangement and motion determine the different states of matter

States of matter:
Different forms in which matter can exist.

THREE COMMON STATES OF MATTER:

SOLID, LIQUID, AND GAS

THE STATE OF A SUBSTANCE DEPENDS

ON TWO THINGS

The space between particles and the way that particles move.

SOLIDS

PARTICLES WITH A FIXED VOLUME AND FIXED SHAPE

SOLIDS

  • Particles in solids are
  • Very close together and they
  • Can only vibrate in place.

LIQUIDS

SUBSTANCE WITH A FIXED VOLUME AND INDEFINITE SHAPE

LIQUIDS

  • Particles are close together.
  • They slide and glide.

GAS

SUBSTANCE WITH NO FIXED VOLUME OR SHAPE.

GAS

  • Particles aren't close together
  • And they can move freely.

PLASMA

GASES WHOSE PARTICLES HAD SO MUCH ENERGY THEY BECOME ELECTRICALLY CHARGED
