MARRIAGE

YOUNG JEWISH GIRLS

  • From the age 12 to 121/2 she becomes eligible to be married
  • Her father still has rights to sell her in to slavery
  • The father is the one who chooses who she can marry
  • She cannot refuse anyone her father chooses
  • She is not to be married until a year after the betrothment

HUSBANDS RIGHTS

  • Only the husband can denounce the marriage
  • The husband had to pay a dowry of a pound of gold
  • If the woman was unable to bear children, the husband could take another wife

ON WEDDING DAY

  • Bride is dressed by her parents
  • She gets covered with a veil to cover her eyes
  • Her friends would put sashes on her
  • The celebration lasts a week
  • There's a procession to from the brides fathers house to the grooms father

AFTER THE WEDDING

  • All the family and friends leave and the husband takes his wife to bed
  • If the bride is a virgin the wedding is celebrated for three days
  • If not she is immediately denounced

ROLE OF THE WOMEN

  • Had to look after the husband
  • Obey them
  • Mill grain and work the wool
  • Cook meals and wash clothes
  • Sometime she even has to wash her husbands face and feet

ROLE OF THE MEN

  • Provide food and clothing
  • Buy back his wife if she got captured
  • Lodging
  • Fulfill conjugal duties
  • Buy necessities
