MAYAN CREATION STORY

BY FRANK FRICKE

MAYAN TIMES

THEY FLOURISHED FROM 300 B.C TO ABOUT 1500 A.D

POPOL VUH

HE WAS THE CREATOR OF LIFE

Here is the story of the beginning,
when there was not one bird,
not one fish,
not one mountain.
Here is the sky, all alone.
Here is the sea, all alone.
There is nothing more
–no sound, no movement.
Only the sky and the sea.
Only Heart-of-Sky, alone.
And these are his names:
Maker and Modeler,
Kukulkan,
and Hurricane.
But there is no one to speak his names.
There is no one to praise his glory.
There is no one to nurture his greatness.

The popol vuh created animals but they did not talk. They only howled and squawked. So he created beings from the earth.

Another myth of the maya has to do with the hero twins. They play the role of our sun and moon. After they were put through a series of trials they became the sun and moon. They planted the way for the corn to grow.

Difference
The first already had the sky and ocean as well as the sun and moon. And had to retry and create man 3 different times. And the popol vuh was the only deity or God. The second is that they hero twins had to deal with the underworld and many trials to be the guides for the corn. Which brought man to the earth once again.
There also many other versions of the creation of earth and man.
