MAYANS

WHERE AND WHEN

• The Maya's lived near Guatemala,Honduras,Belize and in today's Mexico
• The peak of the civilization was between 250 A.D. and 900 A.D.

WHAT DID THEY ACHIEVE?

• The Mayan's were amazing builders and built temples
• They learned how to grow crops such as corn, beans, and squash, etc.
• They were the first civilization to use the concept of zero in math

Religon

• Most gods in their religion represent something in nature
• After the Spanish came, many Mayans were forced to switch to Christianity

Clothing

• They wore very loose clothes that they kept up with knots and belts

Activities

• They were skilled weavers and potters
• They were also were good farmers

Government

• Ruled by kings and priests
• Strict laws
• Crimes such as murder were punished with death
• The king is sometimes the judge in court

PEAK OF CIVILIZATION

• The center of their civilization was in Guatemala
• Sadly their civilization mysteriously ended around 900 A.D. after the Spanish took over in Middle America

• Aztecs: They were skilled farmers and craftsmen
• Mayans: They were skilled weavers and farmers
• Aztecs and Mayans: They grew corn, beans, and squash
• Aztecs: They are located in Central America, Mexico
• Mayans: They are located in Central America

CONTRAST

• Mayans: They grew many crops
• Aztecs: They invented Chocolate
• Mayans: They were amazing builders
• Aztecs: They practiced a lot of human sacrifice
• Aztecs: They built floating gardens to garden

STATUS TODAY

• Modern day Mayans still mainly live in Middle America but they can be found all over the world
• There are millions of Mayans that still live on today
• They are not one identity or group anymore because they speak many different languages etc.

REFLECTIONS

• I find it really cool that the Mayans came up with so many new ideas
• I wonder how their religion with the gods representing things in nature came about
• The fact that they grow many crops reminds me of when I used to garden with my family
