RACISM

  • She risked Tom's life to save herself and her father.
  • She took advantage that Tom was black.
  • She is like the rest of Malcom for calling them "niggers".
  • "I said come here, nigger, and bust up this chiffarobe for me."

INEQUALITY

  • Everyone in the courtroom knows that Tom isn't guilty.
  • Mayella lies anyways to protect her father's word.

FEAR

  • She doesn't know whether to tell the truth or not.
  • She creates fear by telling her father that Tom raped her. (for Tom)
  • If Mayella does tell the truth, her father will probably beat her worse.
  • "He (father) does tollable, 'cept when- father looks over- nothing."
  • "Mr. Finch, if you was a nigger like me, you'd be scared, too."

UNFAIRNESS

  • Mayella has to work hard to keep her family stable.
  • She was born into a family with poverty.
  • Her father is an alcoholic and she is all alone with no friends
  • "Mayella must have been the loneliest person in the world."
  • "Their relief check was far from enough to feed the family."
