CURRENT RESEARCH

  • In 2009, scientists discovered that a modified transplant of adult blood stem .
  • cells couldyse in 9 of 10 adults who had been severely affected by the disease
  • In 2010, a study found that neurologically normal adults with sickle cell disease scored lower on tests
  • of brain function than neurologically normal adult participants who did not have sickle cell disease

SYMPTOMS/SIGNS

  • Severe pain Anemia Chest pain and difficulty breathing Strokes Joint pain and arthritis and bone infarctions Blockage of blood flow in the spleen or liver Severe infections
  • The signs are fevers and it sometimes around the neck

AFFECTS TO BODY

  • blood and various organs in the body
  • red blood cells
  • Oxygen is affected
  • liver, kidney's, heart, brain, lungs,and the joints

TREATMENTS

  • over-the-counter pain medicines, heating pads, rest, and plenty of fluids
  • treated with a medicine called hydroxyurea

DIAGNOSED

  • Doctors also can diagnose sickle cell disease before birth.
  • This is done using a sample of amniotic fluid or tissue taken from the placenta.
