EARLY LIFE

  • Born July 2, 1925 in Decatur, Mississippi
  • Grew up in a rural community
  • Had to walk 12 miles to get to his school
  • Before finishing high school, he was inducted into the army
  • Took part in Normandy

EDUCATION

  • Enrolled in Alcorn college in 1948
  • Married his classmate Myrlie Beasly
  • After graduating from Alcorn college, he tried to enroll in Mississippi college
  • But they rejected him
  • Became the field secretary for the NAACP

ADULT LIFE

  • Involved in the civil rights movement
  • Main focus was integrating Mississippi schools
  • Had three children
  • Shot by Byron De La Beckwith
  • Died June 12, 1963

LEGACY

  • Had very important roles in the civil rights movement
  • Buried at Arlington National Cemetery
  • Organized protests against Jim Crow Laws
  • Medgar Evers College is named after him
