Mediation

By Joe Webber
this is going to be my presentation all about mediation. I am going to be looking at several key areas to do with mediation including looking at different examples of video clips we watched in lesson.

Definition

  • Mediation is transforming your interpretation of media
  • so that each piece of media could be the complete opposite.
  • It only actually shows one persons version of the truth
By only showiing one persons view of the truth it limits, the view point of the other people that would be consduming the media production. An example of this is the scientology documentary the first one that we watched. After we had watched this there was another different one on as a reaction video.

accuracy of information in documentaries

  • Due to some documentaries only showing one side of an argument it can be
  • very unbalanced and there fore seem to be unfair. However this is down to
  • the person filming the documentary wnats it to be shown.
  • when thinking about accuracy of information, the sources have to be
  • reliable
Accuracy of information can be improved if you are able to find a second source of information that says the same as the first source. By having a second source it makes it more reliable. For example if you found some information on the internet on one website, but you could not find it any where else on other websites, it shouldn't be trusted because it doesn't have the second source to back up what was said.

Subjectivity

is when only one opinion is given. Examples include selling products
If documentaries are subjective, it would only show the view point or perspective of an issue from one view. It would not even take into consideration the fact that there could be other opinions.

Objectivity

The idea behind this is that everyone has a view point on different subject
By this I am referring to the fact that everyone in society has a view point on a lot of different subjects. Also that each persons opinion is valid and that nobody can really say that a persons opinion or view on a subject doesn't matter if the other person has a different view point.

Impartiality

This is not having a pre-judgement on a subject such as the scientology.
Impartiality is very important when making documentaries. The reason for this is that you are trying to portray both sides of the argument as well as not making your own preferences obvious to the viewing public. By doing this it makes it better, because you get a balanced view showing two sides and nobody is attempting to the viewing public to view it differently to the way they view the subject.

My Brother the Islamist

  • it is a documentary about a person who changes their religion
  • they have to change a lot of different elements in their life
  • in order to become Islamic.
This is a documentary about two brothers and one of them has changed religion from being a christian to being an Islamist. He has to change a lot of things in his life including getting rid of a lot of the stuff that he owns and not meeting with people that he use to be friends with in order to be considered a true Islamist.

Scientology and Me

  • This was a very unbalanced view of scientology.
  • It only shows one side of the viewpoint.
  • It doesn't even take into consideration other opinions.
  • Therefore making a very bias and one sided documentaty
  • However there was a response to this 'Scientology responds to John Sweeney'
By not taking into consideration other opinion it is very one sided and could be considered to be a very bias way of viewing the subject. The reason this would be considered to be bias is that it purely shows one view. Not even considering any other view point to be remotely the truth. It is very unbalanced and it makes others views of religion out to be a joke and that if you do not believe in Scientology that this means that you are not clever. This documentary was subjective. The reason why is because it shows one side. the people in the documentary feel that there is no other view of religion. The audience would not be able to make a fair judgement of scientology as there is not another religion even mentioned in detail in this documentary to even try to make a comparison from.

Scientology responds to John Sweeney

  • This was a documentary which was made in response to the Scientology and me
  • This was made by the scientology church.
  • It was done from the viewpoint of somebody who believes in scientology and
  • shows the posititive isde of it, or from a believers view of scientology
This was a documentary which was filmed as a response to another documentary. As I have said in the previous slide, Scientology and me was john Sweeney's take on Scientology. Where as Scientology responds to John Sweeney is a reaction video from the view point of people who believe in Scientology back at John Sweeney who does't believe in Scientology.
