• Giovanni di Becci dé Medici would begin the great Medici dynasty

• Through banking, the Medici family rose to become one of the most important houses in Florence

A NEW MEDICI BRANCH COMES TO POWER

• The son of the Magnificent brother Guiliano abdicated power in 1523 to become Pope Clement VII
• The descendants of Cosimo the Elder's brother came forward to launch a new Medici Family
• Lorenzo's great great grandson Cosimo, became Duke of Florence in 1537

WHO IS COSIMO?

• He was able to control Florence, Italy because of his wealth
• He was also known as Cosimo the Elder

THE MEDICI FAMILY IS DECLINED

• After Cosimo II died in 1720 in Florence, Tuscany suffered under ineffectual Medici rule
• When the last Medici grand Duke, Gian Gastone died in 1737, the family dynasty died with him

THE MEDICI FAMILY IS DECLINED

• By agreement of the European powers, control of Tuscany passed to Francis of Lorraine
