THE HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE

  • Established after the fall of Roman Empire
  • Pope and King run together
  • Grew out of Charlemagne's Empire
  • King elected by nobles
  • Disagreements occurred over power

CHARLEMAGNE

  • Added a lot of land to the Frankish Kingdom
  • Alive from 742 to 814 AD
  • He was smart warrior and strong king
  • Added a lot of schools to the growing empire
  • Crowned after taking back parts of the Roman Empire

WILLIAM OF NORMANDY

  • Originally the duke of Normandy
  • Came from France
  • Won the Battle of Hastings
  • Became King of England
  • Gave his knights land, starting Fuedalism

PAPAL AUTHORITY AND THE CLERGY

  • Pope had great power in Europe
  • Pope was the head of the church
  • Could excommunicate anyone who rebelled
  • Had great influence over European society
  • Bishops and abbots were also political

THE CRUSADES

  • Fought over Palestine, also known as the Holy Land
  • First crusade was a success, in which the Holy Land was captured
  • Second crusade failed, and the third is the most famous
  • King Richard l faced Saladin in the third Crusade
  • The crusades positively changed Europe and the Middle East

KING RICHARD AND SALADIN

  • King Richard and Saladin fought in third crusade
  • King Richard was the last crusader king to fight in this crusade
  • Saladin was one of the best Muslim generals
  • Saladin beat King Richard in this crusade
  • Both honest and very respected rulers

MAGNA CARTA

  • Limited the power of King John
  • King John was forced into signing the Magna Carta
  • 63 different rules in the whole document
  • Guaranteed people rights, that all had to follow
  • Still applies to all people of England

  • Happened in the late Middle Ages
  • Series of different plagues
  • Worst one was the bubonic plague
  • Came from Western Asia
  • Took out 1/3 of Europe's population

  • War over the rule of France
  • England almost won in the end
  • Joan of Arc rallied the French
  • The French won the war
  • Joan of Arc was killed by the English

SPANISH INQUISITION

  • Spain was a strict Christian country
  • This was an organization that punished heretics
  • They also punished Muslims and Jews
  • Sentenced 2,000 people to die in Spain
  • 1,400 people were killed in Portugal
