Meiji restoration lasted from 1868-1912. Meiji means enlightened rule.

The motto of the Meiji period was: "A rich country, a strong military."

The ruler during the modernization period was Emperor Meiji.

Emperor Meiji wanted to create a more western civilization and government.

The Meiji period modernized with great speed and success.

To modernize Japan, the government built: Rail yards, post offices, and ports.
