GREEK CITY STATES

HERAION

  • Temple dedicated to the goddess Hera.
  • 650BCE-600BCE
  • Built in Olympia

THE HEPHAISTEINION

  • A temple built to Athena and hephaistos.
  • 449BCE
  • Built in the Athens

THEATRE OF DELOS

MOST MEMORABLE

  • The parthenon built 447BCE-432BCE
  • It was built to display the large built statue of Athena and made of stone and pillars
  • Having it built to tower of the city of Athenians exemplifies their power and wealth
  • a part of the state treasury. Tax money from Delian league used to pay for it.
  • Since that tax money helped with cost, tax money held inside the temple that collected by Delian.

CLOSING

  • I believe that the Greek city states built to mainly show power, but more than that.
  • Their architecture shows their adoration they have towards their Greek gods and goddesses
  • Also with the most memorable one it shows power through intimidation with the large statue of Athena

MEDIEVAL EUROPE

ROMANESQUE CATHEDRALS

  • Built in 10th century
  • Had certain structure:masonry arches, few windows,thick stone walls, and etc.
  • Built in shape of a cross symbolize how Jesus Christ died on cross
  • Cathedrals mainly for religious purposes

GOTHIC ART CATHEDRALS

  • Around 1200 when being built
  • Structure design different: huge stain glass windows, pointed vaults,and etc.
  • They had arches that from developed from the Islamic world
  • Compared to Romanesque cathedrals, they appeared weightless
  • Religious art took form also in these cathedrals

CASTLES- GOTHIC ART

  • Protect lords and kings
  • Had moats with draw bridge
  • Time: 1100-1500
  • Preserve the king and noble's power to the land
  • Prevent attacks from Viking raids

MOST MEMORABLE

  • Cathedrals for many purposes
  • They hold religious meaning in them and to how they are built
  • Are considered household for God and king
  • You come to worship in them
  • Are decorated with finest design and beauty to leave visitors in awe.

CLOSING

  • I consider that they built their architecture to display wealth
  • Also they display their religious belief with beauty and designs (ex- the Romanesque)
  • They also show diffusion of cultures (gothic using Islamic world design)
