Meningitis

(BACTERIAL)

occurrences

  • Most cases are isolated
  • Risk of spreading is low
  • More common in infancy and childhood

SYMPTOMS

  • Fever and chills
  • Mental status changes
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Severe head ache

  • Stiff neck
  • Agitation
  • Bulging soft spots
  • Decreased alertness
  • Rapid breathing

Diagnosis

  • Spinal Tap
  • Blood Culture
  • Chest X-ray
  • CT scan

Treatment

  • Antibiotics- depending on the bacteria
  • Hospitalization
  • Medicines to help reduce symptoms(through a tube)

Prevention

  • Vaccinations
  • Menigococcal Conjugate (MCV4)
  • Meningococcal Polysaccharide (MPSV4)
