MESOPOTAMIA INVENTIONS

PLOW

  • A plow is drawn by a tractor or by animals.
  • This is used for cutting furrows in the soil and turning it over.
  • This plow was invented around 6000 B.C.

~WHEEL~

  • The wheel allowed Mesopotamians to have transportation.
  • The wheel was invented in 3500 B.C.
  • It took 3,000 years later to dicorver that wheels could be used for chariots.

CALENDAR:

  • The calendar was primarily lunar, and the months began with the first sighting of the waxing crescent moon.
  • Each month is either 29 or 30 days long, and the year approximately 354 days.
  • This calender was created in 2,000 B.C.

CUNIEFORM

  • Cuneiform was a way if writing, made with 1,200 differnt charcaters.
  • Characters created such things as names, physical objects, and numbers.
  • Cuneiform was written by cutting wedge-shaped marks into damp clay.

~SAILBOAT~

  • Mesopotamian's decided that a sailboat could be used to trade with nearby citties.
  • They were simple wooden boats that would carry people and goods downstream & upstream.
  • This was invented around 1,300 B.C.

CODE OF HAMMARABI:

  • Hammarabi is best known for creating laws for his empire.
  • The code dealt with crimes, farming, business, marriage, and the family.
  • Hammarabi's Code influenced later law codes, such as those of Greece and Rome.

IRRIGATION

  • Irrgation is used for finding:
  • an abundant supply of good water,
  • well-drained soil,
  • good regional drainage,
  • and supply of fertilize soil.

~NUMBER SYSTEMS~

  • They used geometry to measure the size of fields and to plan buildings.
  • They created a place-value system of numbers based on 60.
  • They also devised tables for calculating division and multiplication.
