MESOPOTAMIAN INVENTIONS

PLOW

  • The plow was invented by 3000 B.C.
  • The plow has changed from wood to metal.
  • The plow was used to loosen the soil to plant seeds.
  • The plow can be used by hand, machine, or animals.
  • This made life easier for farmers.

THE WHEEL

  • The wheel was invented around 3500 B.C.
  • The wheel has changed from wood to metal and steel.
  • Carriages were formed because of the wheel.
  • People could travel faster.
  • Many things today use wheels.

THE CALENDAR

  • The calendar was invented around the 2nd millennium B.C.
  • It was primarily lunar.
  • The calendar began on the first sighting lf the waxing crescent moon.
  • Months were added to keep the lunar calendar in agreement with the seasonal schedule.
  • Our calendar is a lot different than Mesopotamia's calendar.

CUNEIFORM

  • Cuneiform is one of the earliest known systems of writing.
  • It was made on wedge-shaped clay tablets that they put in the sun to dry.
  • It was made using reeds, or the stylus.
  • It helped people to communicate.
  • It used signs as words.

THE SAILBOAT

  • The Mesopotamian's used the sailboat to get drinking water.
  • They also used the sailboat to fish in the two rivers.
  • The sailboat was invented around 3000 B.C.
  • The sailboat helped to travel across large bodies of water.
  • The sailboat helped people in Mesopotamia trade with other countries.

THE CODE OF HAMMARABI

  • Hammarabi was the babylonian king from 1792 to 1750, 42 years.
  • A code was named after him, called the Code of Hammarabi.
  • The code was very strict.
  • The code was invented in the year 1750 B.C.
  • Hammarabi's religion was Babylonian Religion.

IRRIGATION

  • Irrigation supplied water to places that didn't get water.
  • They could do this through pipes or ditches.
  • This was invented around 6000 B.C.
  • Irrigation helped people water their crops.
  • Now, we use sprinklers to water our land.

NUMBER SYSTEMS

  • It had a base of 60.
  • It had the numerals 1 and 10
  • It was invented around 3100 B.C.
  • They were formed on tablets of clay
  • They used reeds, or the stylus, to make the numbers, and they set the clay in out in the sun to dry.
