WHAT IS IT?

  • Metamorphic rock is a rock that forms when the texture and composition of preexisting rock changes due to heat and pressure.
  • Metamorphic rocks name came from the Greek word 'meta' meaning changed and 'morpho' meaning form.

WHAT IT'S MADE OF?

  • Metamorphic rock can be formed by any other type of rock (sedimentary and igneous rock)
  • Slate is formed by shale and marble is formed by limestone

TYPES OF METAMORPHIC ROCK

  • Slate
  • Marble
  • Phyllite
  • Quartzite
  • Schist
  • Serpentine
  • Gneiss
  • Hornfels

ROCKS UNDERGOING METAMORPHISM

  • One way rock can undergo metamorphism is by being heated by nearby magma
  • When a rock goes through metamorphism the original rock changes into new minerals that are more stable

FOLIATED AND NON FOLIATED

  • Foliated means when the rock consists of minerals that are aligned and look almost like pages in a book
  • Non foliated means metamorphic rock that does not appear to have any regular pattern
