PRESENTATION OUTLINE

How to understand the metric system.

The metric system is not the standard units of measurement in the U.S. But it is in the rest of the world except for us and a few other countries. That is the reason why we don't use it as much as the U.S. Customary system.

The metric system is based on the number ten. Every unit you go up or down from one meter It ether multiplies or divides by ten. For example a decimeter is one tenth of a meter, a centimeter is a tenth of a decimeter. Etc.

Millimeters are used to measure very small objects and distances.
Centimeters are also used to measure small objects and distances.
Decimeters are not used as much but they can be used to measure larger distances and objects.

Meters are used to measure large objects and most metric distances.
A decameter is a unit that is ten meters it is not a widely used unit.
Hectometers are ten decameters and are also not widely used.

Kilometers are ten Hectometers or 1000 meters they are one of the more widely used units in the metric system they are used to measure large distances.

NOW...

HOW TO READ THE METRIC RULER.

There are two sides of a ruler, inches and centimeters. Each long hash on the side with thirty of them is the metric side. One of the long hash is a centimeter.

The hashes half the size of it are marking half of a centimeter. The smallest hashes are millimeters. Most rulers are English and metric. Also there are 30 centimeters in one foot, which means six inches is also 15 centimeters.

Meter sticks are 3.2085 feet in a meter stick. There are also exactly 100 centimeters in a meter which makes 1000 millimeters in a meter.
