TREATY OF HIDALGO

  • The treaty added an additional 525,000 square miles to United States territory, including the including the land that makes up all or parts of present-day Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming.

AFTERMATH OF THE TREATY

  • Though President Polk was successful during the war, he lost support afterwards
  • The new land reignited the slavery issue.
  • Provided new economic opportunities such as the California Gold Rush

IMPORTANCE OF RAILROADS

  • Bound counties together and allowed for distant travel
  • Outlet for products
  • Very important in the civil war

U.S. MILITARY ADVANTAGES

  • Better firepower
  • Better generals
  • Better junior officers
  • Infighting amongst the Mexican army
  • Better resources. Mexico did however have home field advantage.

IMPORTANT VICTORIES FOR THE U.S.

  • The siege of Veracruz (1947)
  • The battle of Cerro Gordo (1947)
  • The Battle of Chapultepac led to Mexico's surrender

INDIAN REMOVAL ACT

  • By 1830 land hungry Americans decided to completely take away the Natives freedom
  • This resulted in the infamous trail of tears.
