PRESENTATION OUTLINE

On February 2, 1848 the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed. This treaty ended the Mexican-American War and gave the United States a large amount of land. The U.S. gained the land from Texas to California and emerged as a power in this time. With this treaty also came the achievement of the Manifest Destiny. Many immigrants and people of America were able to move to the new land and make a living. In California large amounts of gold were discovered and many people moved there for work. This migration was possible due to the use of railways. Railways also allowed for better control over distant lands in the U.S.

The United States was able to win the war due to many advantages. There were supplies and tactics the Americans had that the Mexicans did not, also Mexico was not the most stable country. The United States did not have as many troops and fought on Mexican soil, but had superior fire power. The guns were better, and the Americans were better trained with their use. The leadership of American generals was outstanding and the soldiers followed orders well. Mexico also c
gave the U.S. advantages, because there was fighting within its own ranks. The Americans won many key battle such as the Battle of Palo Alto, and the battle to gain control over Mexico City.

After The United States gained this land, the Native Americans and others who were not white were not treated fairly. In the California constitution there was a law that stated that If minerals were found on Native American land they would have to give it up. Also they were not allowed to participate in politics. Many other laws were past that made equality seemed as though it were disappearing.
