Slaves were told to get on a boat or die so many went on the boat on the boat the slaves were put on to small shelves they had to squeeze to fit.They did not get enough food and water and many died on the way.
families were torn apart slave owners did everything they could to make the slaves not feel like people .It was horrible so after this terrible boat ride they were forced to work against there will.

The sleeves were treated horribly and some escaped to safe state
slave catchers went after the escaped slaves to bring them back to their owners some were lucky and escaped to safe states.
than California wanted to become a state it wanted to be a free state but if it became a free state there would be more free states than slave states the slave states did not like that.
Congress wanted everyone to be happy so they said California can join as a free state but if slave catchers find escaped slaves they can bring them back to their owners no exceptions if anyone is found helping slaves they Will be put in jail.

some people didn't like that so they start the underground railroad it's a series of houses, churches or barns that are safe for slaves there the escape slaves can eat and rest when it get dark they start going to the next house. usually signs are hidden in songs and stuff that help the escaped slaves find the next safe house.
Election day came around everyone voted and Aberham Lincoln won.
