Peasants/Serfs and Niccolo Machiavelli

Serfs

  • Peasants and Serfs are very different.
  • Serfs are almost like slaves except they couldn't be bought or sold and they could leave the land but they needed there nobles permission.
  • Anything serfs own is property of the Noble. The noble gives them there job and when they get money they can buy there freedom. One this is they are not skilled or educated so why would they be paid?
  • They could become a farmer, blacksmith, tax collector, baker, or a carpenter. They did a lot for very little money.

Peasants

  • The money they were paid went to the churches for taxes.
  • Peasants lived in something called Crucks. It was a mixture of mud, straw, and manure. The straw is used for lining the floor.
  • There water came from the same source, a river or a stream. It was used to eat and wash. At this time soap and shampoo did not exist so they would track in bugs and lice into there beds.
  • The children did not go to school. They usually died before the age of 1 due to diseases. When they came to age, they joined there parents in work but they would not be overworked.
  • Life was very complex. They would live a life of hardship. Everything they needed they had to work for and they could not mess up or that would cost them the little bit of money they did earn.
