HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE

  • Empire grew out of Charlemagne's empire.
  • Became known as the Holy Roman Empire in the 900's
  • Pope Gregory VII and Emperor Henry IV disagreed during this time
  • Holy Roman emperors had to be elected

CHARLEMAGNE

  • A brilliant warrior and a strong king.
  • He led the Franks into building a huge empire.
  • Spent much of his time at war.
  • He was a Christian.
  • He built schools across Europe.

WILLIAM OF NORMANDY

  • Also known as William the conqueror.
  • Became duke of Normandy at the age of 8.
  • Crowned king of England in 1266.
  • He never spoke English and was illiterate.
  • He died on September 9, 1087.

PAPAL AUTHORITY and the clergy

  • refers that the pope has full and universal power over the church. 
  • this ensures that the pope has full authority over the church
  • the clergy also have this authority

THE CRUSADES

  • was a military campaign
  • there were seven crusades in total.
  • Pope Urban II proclaimed the first crusade.
  • cross was used in crusades because of the Holy Land.

King Richard I and Saladin

  • They made peace with each other.
  • King Richard became king of England on July 6, 1189.
  • He also took charge of his own army at the age of 16.
  • Saladin was a muslim leader.
  • He took part in a Crusade over the Holy Land.

Magna carta

  • It is Latin for great charter.
  • It was the first document forced onto a king of England. 
  • Magna Carta gave the subjects some rights.

the plague

  • The Plague ended Feudalism.
  • It killed most of the serfs.
  • It was believed to be brought over by rats with fleas.

hundred years' war

  • War between England and France.
  • Began on May 1337.
  • Ended July 1453.
  • The French won the war.

spanish inquisition

  • It was established in 1478.
  • It replaced the Medieval Inquisition.
  • It was used for both religious and political reasons.
