THE CRUSADES

  • The First Crusade included 5,000 crusaders in 1096. Most were peasants not soldiers.
  • The Second Crusade was in 1147 and it was a terrible failure. It was a total defeat.
  • The Third Crusade began in 1189. There was poor planning and terrible losses.
  • The Fourth Crusade, in 1201, began when the knights had no money so they conquered Zara to be able to sail.
There were other crusades but none were successful. The Muslims took back the Holy Land. The crusades failed because there was a huge travel distance, the climate changes were not planned, and they were outnumbered.

KING RICHARD AND SALADIN
Saladin is often called one of the greatest generals of the Middle Ages because he successfully held Jerusalem against Richard I in the Third Crusade
King Richard is called "Lion Heart" for his courage. He led the Third Crusade but did not succeed.

MAGNA CARTA

THE MAGNA CARTA REQUIRED THE KING TO HONOR CERTAIN RIGHTS
Along with these rights was habeas corpus (means you have body) people could not be kept in jail without a reason. The document was a series of written promises between the king and his subjects that he, the king, would govern England and deal with its people according to the customs of feudal law. Magna Carta was an attempt by the barons to stop a king - in this case John - abusing his power with the people of England suffering.

THE PLAGUE

  • Otherwise known as "Black Death" killed about 100 million people from 1348-1350
  • This disease was brought by rats when they managed to get onto a boat
  • It may have been spread along the Silk Road with Mongol Armies
  • They would send out carts to collect the bodies because people were dieing so quickly
