THE COLONIES

  • New York
  • New Jersey
  • Deleware
  • Pennsylvania

TYPE OF COLONY

  • Royal- NY and NJ. Royal colonies were ruled or
  • Administered by officials who represented the crown
  • Propriety- PA and DE. Propriety colonies granted by the English crown
  • to 1 or more proprietors who had full governing rights

PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY

  • Features- coastal plains, rolling hills,
  • and Mountains
  • Major Cities- New York and Philly

POPULATION

  • Settlers came from England, Netherlands, and Sweden
  • They came to New York for the harbor. They came for natural resources, too.
  • People came to practice relgion freely exept New York. Also for business.
  • There was no religion that dominated, but some others were
  • Quaker, Catholics, Jews, Lutherans,and Presbyterians.

  • A successful and diverse economy.Largly agricultural.
  • Farms in region grew many crops like grain and oats.
  • They had major shipping hubs, craftmen, blacksmiths, silversmiths,
  • Cobblers,and wigmakers
  • They had logging, shipbuilding,and textile production

INTERESTING FACTS

  • William Penn was granted land that became PA in 1682.
  • William Penn pesuaded the Duke of York to lease western shore of DE bay.
  • The middle colonies were known as the " Breadbasket Colonies"
  • Because of their large amounts of barley, wheat, oats, and rye!
