MIGRATION OF JEWS TO PALESTINE IN THE 20TH CENTURY

Jews used to inhabit Palestine, then called Judea. But after the Roman occupation of Judea in the first century, many Jews fled to Europe and other areas.

Over the century's, Jews started to immigrate back to Palestine. In the 13th century, Jews were expelled from England, France, and Central Europe. Most resided in Russia and Eastern Europe.

In 1492, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella expelled all Jewish people living in Spain and most fled to the Palestine area.

In 1881 the Russians began mass killings on the Jews. At the turn of the 20th century, many Jews fled Russia due to religious prosecution.

WHY DID THE JEWS MOVE?

  • At the turn of the 20th century many Jews fled to Palestine
  • Anti-semitism was strong in Europe at the time
  • It was strongest especially in Germany, Austria, and France
  • Anti-semitism is the belief that Jews were an inferior race
  • Many people blamed the Jews for their economic issues

Where were the Jews distributed?
The Jews fled to Palestine, an area of the Mediterranean region including modern day Israel and Palestine territories of the Gaza strip.

At the beginning of the 20th century the Jews in Palestine numbered around 70,000, about 10% of the population

The Arabs in Palestine opposed Zionism, which was the belief that the Jews should create their own independent country

In 1947, the United Nations split up Palestine into Jewish and Arab areas. The nation of Israel was created on May 14, 1948.
