The last town before the frontier, Independence, Missouri is a place to buy supplies and set out on the journey west. It is near the Kansas river. A bustling town, Independence is the starting point for the Oregon trail, California trail, and Santa fe trail.
a muddy river with undrinkable water, the Platte river runs through the valley of the Platte. the Platte river is slow moving, but broad. a mile or two away is a prairie dog town.
they summit the mountains and cross the continental divide. all the rivers on one side flow to the Atlantic and all the rivers on the other flow to the pacific.
the forty mile desert is a barren wasteland that conveniently has a mountain in the middle. when they run out of water the journey gets twice as hard. the palace car gets left behind in the desert. there where other peoples belongings littered along the trail. most of the oxen gave out.
they get snowed in for months. their cabins are buried in snow. they eat very little. on Christmas morning patty's mother gives her children a good meal. eventually patty's father comes back and rescues them.
