What is diction?

  • The author's choice of words.

High Diction

  • Uses No Slang
  • Has no gramical errors.

Low diction

  • Has many grammatical errors.
  • Example: How kids text eachother.

Slang

  • Many errors in slang.
  • Makes things shorter
  • Example: BRB, TTYL, LOL

Jargon

  • The language specific to a topic.
  • Example: Minions have words that humans don't.
  • Example: Touchdown, Field goal, First-down.

Denotation

  • The primary meaning of a word.
  • Example: Home is a building where you live.

Connotation

  • The secondary definition to a word.
  • Example: Home is a warm, cuddly place.

Positive vs. Negative connotation

  • Positive: You are skinny!
  • Negative: You are thin!

General

  • Discusses broad groups.
  • Example: Pets vs. Dogs

Specific

  • Discusses more focused examples
  • Example: Cats/Gerbils/Poodle
