MILK FEVER AND MASTITIS

MILK FEVER

  • Also known as Hypocalcemia
  • Metabolic disease caused by low blood calcium level
  • This disorder affects cows after calving or close to calving

MILK FEVER SIGNS

  • Muscle tremors of head and limbs
  • Staggering or "sitting" position
  • Low temperature
  • Weak and fast heartbeat

MILK FEVER CAUSES

  • Milk and colostrum production drain calcium and they can not replace enough once labor starts
  • Fat cows are at greater risks than skinny cows

MILK FEVER TREATMENT

  • Treatment should be given as soon as possible
  • IV calcium
  • Getting the cow up or propped up

MILK FEVER PREVENTION

  • Management of diet
  • Hay feed 1-2 weeks prior to calving
  • injection of calcium borogluconate just before or just after calving.

MASTITIS

  • Inflammation of udder tissue and mammory gland
  • Very common shortly after calving
  • Bacterial invasion of the teat canal
  • Transferred from milker to milker

MASTITIS SYMPTOMS

  • Swelling of udder
  • Heat
  • Chunky milk
  • Bloody milk

MASTITIS TREATMENT

  • Antibiotics
  • Teat flush
  • Bedding change
  • Frequent cleaning if the teat
