MILLARD FILLMORE

  • Millard Fillmore was our 13th President
  • He had a law practice in east Aurora, but he had no formal education.
  • He ran for New York legislature 3 terms in state assembly.

EARLY LIFE

  • Fillmore was born January 7th, 1800
  • He was born in Locke Township New York, into poverty in a Log Cabin
  • Phoebe Fillmore Millard and Nathaniel Fillmore were his parents.
  • At 15 he was apprenticed to a cloth maker by his father to make extra money for the the family

EDUCATION

  • He moved to New Hope, New York
  • He became obsessed with education stealing books when he could.
  • He attended New Hope Academy where he met his future wife. Abigail Powers, who was also his teacher.

JOBS BEFORE PRESIDENCY

  • In 1819 he got a job as a clerk w/ judge
  • He was admitted to the New York bar in 1823
  • Joined the Anti-Masonic party as a young lawyer
  • After that his political career began.

CONT.

  • 1828 he ran for the New York State assembly and won
  • He served 3 terms
  • He was elected to the House of Representatives in 1832
  • He joined the Whig party through Thurlow Weed the party boss.
  • 1834 resigned from the House and ran for NY Governor but failed.

CONT.

  • 1846 Fillmore helped establish the University of Buffalo
  • He served as the schools first Chancellor
  • 1847 he was elected to NY Comptroller.
  • 1848 he was tapped to run as Vice Pres. W/ Zachary Taylor.

VICE PRESIDENCY

  • since Fillmore and Taylor didn't really get along Fillmore was excluded from all major roles
  • he was also Regelated to being president of the senate.
  • The senate was beginning to debate several bills addressing slavery in the south.

PRESIDENCY

  • The sudden death of Zachary Taylor in Jul of 1850 brought a political shift to the administration
  • Zachary Taylor's entire cabinet resigned.
  • Fillmore sided w/ Democratic senator, Stephen Douglas.
  • They formed a series of bills that became the compromise of 1850
  • While the compromise passed, it only prolonged the split in the union

PRESIDENCY

  • He was unpopular by many and was passed over for re nomination by the Whig party.

POST PRESIDENCY

  • As the Whig party disintegrated Fillmore pursued to join the Republican Party
  • He ran for presidency again but lost
  • He officially retired from Politics
  • He returned to New York and later died on March 8, 1824 from the effects of a stroke.
