BACKGROUND

  • Born september 13, 1857 Dauphin County Pennsylvania
  • Grew up on the Milton Family Farm
  • Limited schooling as young boy
  • Attended many one room school houses
  • Father wanted him to go into printing business

BACKGROUND

  • Became an apprentice of local printer at young age
  • Did not enjoy trade left at age 15
  • Not yet 20 he started M.S. Hershey Wholesale and Resale Confectioner in Pennsylvania in 1876
  • Sold it in 1882, moved to Denver Colorado
  • Was hired by local candy maker where he learned to make caramel.

BACKGROUND

  • Had two failing businesses in New York and Chicago
  • Moved back to Lancaster
  • Started Lancaster Caramel Company in 1883
  • Was a success

BACKGROUND

  • In 1893 Milton attended The Worlds Columbian Exposition
  • Met German with chocolate making equipment
  • Bought some and started Hershey Chocolate Company in 1894
  • Later merged both companies
  • Sold Caramel company

  • Hershey helped community thrive
  • Built model homes, sports facilities, schools, etc.
  • Renamed the town Hershey (obviously)
