Causes of a Fixed Mindset

  • Performance/results based praise
  • Set backs
  • Success of others (Jealousy)
  • Criticism from others
  • Hard work = No natural talent

Attributes of a Growth Mindset

  • More likely to enjoy what you do
  • Embraces challenges
  • Failure is an opportunity to improve
  • Takes ownership of failures/doesn't blame others or circumstances
  • Good at estimating their own strengths and weaknesses
  • Losing is not a permanent lot in life

Causes of a Growth Mindset

  • Praise for effort and progress
  • small/incremental achievements
  • Hard work = improved results
  • Long term goals achieved

Closed Mindset vs Growth Mindset

Impact of Mindset in Athletics

Fixed mindset athletes tend to be bad teammates. They blame others for loses. They worry about stats more than team achievements.

Growth mindset athletes work tend to work for the team, not themselves. Uses criticism to improve, not pout. Championships not awards.
