Minerals are broken up by weathering and erosion

Geologists have many ways of identifying minerals. They identify by color, luster, streak, hardness, density, fracture, and cleavage. They use these characteristics to identify a mineral.

Elements can not be broken down into simpler substances and they chemically join to make minerals.

There are thousands of minerals. We use them everyday in vitamins, salt, nail files, and milk.
