Purpose for Coaching Cycles

  • Impacting teaching and learning is our purpose
  • Growth occurs incrementally
  • Single conversations are fragmented and unfocused

Typical Coaching Cycles

  • Approximately 4-6 weeks in duration
  • A minimum of one weekly planning conversation to look at student work and design upcoming instruction
  • One to three times per week for co-teaching in the classroom
  • With individuals, pairs, or groups

Mini Coaching Cycles

  • Approximately 3 weeks in duration
  • With individuals or pairs
  • Tightly focused goal

Examples of Focused Goals

  • Students will add their own mathematical reasoning to their written work.
  • Students will provide feedback to a peer.
  • Students will use academic language when discussing the three branches of government.

Session One

  • Meet to set a goal for students
  • If possible, use student evidence/data to set goal
  • Break the goal into learning targets
  • Spend a session in the classroom to collect evidence

Session Two

  • Meet for a co-planning session and use student evidence
  • Determine how the co-planned lesson will be shared
  • Co-teach the lesson

  • Meet to reflect on the co-taught lesson
  • Analyze student evidence
  • Co-plan how the teacher will reach the goal for students
