WHERE AND HOW IS IT USED?

  • The only 2 places they still are mining today are in Fillmore County and the Mesabi Range.
  • They are used to mine taconite, copper, and iron ore.
  • They are crushed into bullet sized pieces and shipped off to steel mills to be mixed with oxygen to create steel!

IMPACTS ON THE ENVIRONMENT

  • Acid mine drainage-when the water and the acid from mining are mixed together and drain into Minnesota's clean lakes.
  • There is a higher risk for cancer if you are mining.
  • The acid mine drainage kills lots of fish because when it leaks into the water and poisons all the creatures in the water and all the animals that drink the water.
  • Birds are also affected by Acid-Mine Drainage, the birds actually get poisoned when they are migrating. They stop in different places to bathe and drink/eat, and get poisoned from the water.
