MINOR DEPRESSION (Dysthymia)

Dysthymia is a chronic form of depression that is less severe than major depression, but people who are diagnosed with dysthymia usually have a form of underlying depression.

Although dysthymia may be less severe than major depression, it lasts much longer. It can last for years.

SYMPTOMS OF DYSTHYMIA

  • loss of interest in normal activities
  • hopelessness
  • low self-esteem
  • low appetite
  • low energy
  • sleep pattern changes
  • poor concentration

CAUSES FOR DYSTHYMIA

  • a chemical imbalance in the brain
  • a family history of the condition
  • chronic physical illness, such as heart disease or diabetes

MORE CAUSES FOR DYSTHYMIA

  • stressful or traumatic life events, such as the loss of a loved one or financial problems
  • a history of other mental health disorders, such as anxiety or bipolar disorder
  • brain injury, such as a concussion

Some treatments for dysthymia include exercise and seeing a PCP, a clinical psychologist, and/or a psychiatrist.

OTHER EFFECTIVE TREATMENTS INCLUDE

ANTIDEPRESSANTS AND PSYCHOTHERAPY.
