MISSION TO MARS

By: Charlotte Mintzer

WHY MARS?

  • MARS HAS THE BEST TEMPERATURES (-220°F TO 68°F)
  • IT'S NOT TO FAR AWAY FROM EARTH (6,437KM)
  • OK ATMOSPHERE (THINNER THAN EARTH'S)
  • Big ENOUGH FOR SPACECRAFT TO LAND AND TAKE OFF FROM (229MILION KM)
  • OK SURFACE (ROCKY)
We are not exploring other planets because of there conditions, for example we can't explore Jupiter because it's made of gasses you can't land on it. Another example is Venus could melt us and it's atmosphere would crush us.Mars has shown that it has the best conditions for a space craft to land and also for humans
. We hope to explore Mars because of curiosity and we are hoping to find another planet that humanity can live on in case of emergencies and just to " spread people out."So we will also have more room on earth. We are hoping to find an actual water source and possibly other life forms to withstand the needs of the people.

SPACE CRAFT CRITERIA/CONSTAINTS

  • Needs to be able to drop rover safely
  • Have all suplies/fuel to get to Mars and back
  • Has to have good communication sytems
  • Needs to be able to be controlled from Earth
  • Has to be able to go on rocky surfaces
It also has to have good landing gear because of the rocky surface and it also needs to be able to escape mars gravitational pull and atmosphere.

SPACECRAFT PROTOTYPE #1

  • LOTS/extra fuel because no humans
  • Big controll center so we can controll it from Earth
  • Heat sheild to protect from heat
  • Big lab for all other devices/cameras/rover

SPACE CRAFT PROTOTYPE #2

  • MUCH more fuel
  • Better equiptment and lab to hold equiptment
  • Better communication center with mother board, cameras, and controll board
  • Area for rover
  • Better shield and shield generator

SPACE CRAFT PROTOTYPE #3

  • Even better fuel space
  • Much better lab with high tech computers
  • Also with a better mother board commanded from earth
  • Large entenas for communication from Earth

PARACHUTES

  • Need them to create drag on space ship so it doesn't crash
  • Need for rover to touch down slowly on surface of mars without breaking
  • Basicly to create DRAG meaning=slowing things down so they don't crash

Tests
Our variable was our suspension lines because they were 21 in. but we had to cut it down to 13in. so we could add a 5th suspension line on to create more drag.

Final Parachute
Our final parachute had a plastic large size canopy because they both created the most drag because they caught and held the most air. Also our suspension lines were the longest size, 21in. because they created the most drag but we decided to cut them down to 13in. so we could add a 5th line to create extra drag.

The End
In this whole experience I learned how each component plays such a big roll in making a space craft, parachute, and rover and how everything works in space and also about drag is so important to ANYTHING about space!5...4...3...2...1... Lift off!
