- Alabama: slave state in 1819
North said:
"Congress has the right to get rid of slavery in any state created west of the Mississippi River."
South said:
"If the balance of power shifted toward the north, slavery could be made illegal and destroy our slave-based economy"
Compromise said:
Missouri is admitted as slave state, but banned slavery in any region north of the Missouri Compromise Line
