moa - why are they extinct???

Because they couldn't fly they were easy to catch by wild dogs brought in by european settlers the dogs mostly caught the chicks and eggs because they are flightless and slow.

Maori also killed the moa for the meat which could last days and they also killed the moa for the feathers to make the chiefs cloaks.

Moa might of also died out because of the Haast Eagle that ate the chicks and the adult birds which would slow down the rate of reproduction.

  • Some Moa grow up to be 3 meters tall and weigh up to 250kg
  • There were 10 different species of Moa
  • The Moa was the biggest animal in New Zealand
  • Moa are not the only bird in New Zealand that is extinct
  • Moa is pronounced MORE not MOWER
