PRESENTATION OUTLINE

MOB MENTALITY

aka "HERD MENTALITY"

WHAT IS IT?

  • The inability or refusal to listen to one's own instinct
  • Or, "gut feeling". BUT!
  • To instead follow the majority.
  • For, fear of being wrong, ostracized or ridiculed.
  • "Herd Mentality." Urban Dictionary. N.p., n.d. Web. 22 Oct. 2013.

IN LAYMEN'S

  • It's basically a human behavior
  • When placed in a group of people,
  • People tend to "follow the leader"
  • As depicted by simple children's games
  • (Which is the basis of human nature)

"FOLLOW THE LEADER"

  • When in this "mode",
  • People feel as if they're
  • "Under Pressure"
  • To follow the crowd and think as a unit
  • Which, in turn, creates "FEAR".

FEAR?

  • That's correct.
  • The FEAR of being singled out in the group.
  • When placed under this "FEAR",
  • Irrational actions become rational,
  • And this concept amplified to a large group can be dangerous.

SALEM WITCH TRIALS

  • The most renowned mob mentality
  • When faced with something extreme,
  • People tend to "wig out"
  • This created the giant witch scare in Salem.
  • Created by the majority mentality

DURING SUCH TRAILS,

  • If you didn't follow everyone,
  • And attempt to defy witchery,
  • YOU WERE CONSIDERED A WITCH!
  • See where this mentality gets dangerous?

12TH STREET RIOT

  • A riot on 12th street in Detroit
  • An unlicensed bar named,
  • "Blind Pig"
  • Was raided by the police
  • (Previous Detroit Race Riots in image)

DETROIT RIOTS OF 67'

  • Civilians were enraged
  • by the altercations with the police.
  • Most damaging riots of Detroit to this day
  • (Image of current day location of riots)

AN EXAMPLE IN TEXT

  • Here's a prime example,
  • "This note, and variants on it, circulated on August 7,
  • the day after a riot had broken out in the London district of Tottenham,
  • protesting the police killing of a 29-year-old man in a botched arrest.
  • So the recipients of this missive, many of them at least, were already..

CONT.

  • primed for violence."
  • Wasik, Bill. "#Riot: Self-Organized, Hyper-Networked Revolts—
  • Coming to a City Near You." Wired.com. Conde Nast Digital, 16 Dec.
  • 2011. Web. 23 Oct. 2013.
  • This quote simply states the actions of people in a group in an enraged state

SPORTS MOBS

  • Most brutal by far
  • Easily enraged
  • Large amounts of testosterone
  • (Mob of hockey fans attacking other fan)
  • Most people wouldn't do that, unless caught up in a mob
