Intro:
In America, the education system is a vital foundation in providing an opportunity of success to all children. Through the development of culture in a society, however, change in education is needed in order to improve the learning of students. As G.K. Chesterson once said, “Education is simply the soul of a society as it passes from one generation to another.” In this idea, it is important to understand how changes in education will affect future generations.

Education in the Past:
America during the 1930’s was a time of significant social change. Despite the hardships presented during The Great Depression, the motivation to move on became greater than before. In this way, educators found it necessary to adopt new standard of teaching in order to better prepare children for the future. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Jem confronts Scout, stating, “Our teacher says Miss Caroline’s introducing a new way of teaching. She learned about it in college. It will be in all the grades soon” (Lee 20).

Effectiveness:
Scout, an advanced student, finds herself to be restricted of individuality in thinking through the new teaching method and for the first time, Harper Lee portrays the flaws in changes in the education. In Psychology Today, Michael Michalcko states, “Unfortunately, I've come to believe that education is a great inhibitor of our natural creativity... To me it seems that in the real world those who know more, create less; and those who know less create more.”

Contrast:
Despite this idea, changes in the structure of education may not always impact a student’s life negatively. We find a sharp contrast to the limitation of knowledge to today’s modern changes in education through the societal development of technology through devices such as computers and iPads.

Effectiveness:
In article, written by Jennifer Job and Kris Zorigan, on Learn NC, identify technology as “an equalizer in a classroom of diverse learners.” Through the upbringing of technology in schools across the nation, students have the ability to learn at their own level with an abundance of information in their use, leaving a positive impact on students.

Conclusion:
Societal change in an education system affects a student based on the classroom in which a student is learning. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee demonstrates the negative effects of restricting a student from further knowledge through a new learning system. Today, however, the introduction of technology to the classroom has brought a positive impact in advancing the knowledge of students at their own level. In this way, it can be inferred that the educator’s use of a new learning system and the change in education itself are related in creating the environment for a child’s schooling.
