Why Intensive Support?

The ESL teacher works with an individual or a small group of ELLs for the literacy learning block.

Benefits of Intensive Support

  • programming with classroom teacher for the needs of the student & group
  • work together with peers in a smaller setting
  • literacy learning blocks and/for curriculum
  • use of assistive technology
  • flexibility: withdrawal and integration options based on needs

Sometimes the amount of differentiation possible in a regular class is not enough to support some learning needs (Supporting English Language Learners in Grades 1 to 8, 2012).

Intensive Support Program

  • Reading: vocabulary and comprehension
  • Writing: grammar and traits
  • Oral Communication: speaking and listening
  • Media Literacy: studying, understanding, and creating media
  • Learning Skills: cooperating and problem-solving (orientation)

Program Goal: to support ELLs to have full access to grade level curriculum in the regular classroom when they are ready.

When appropriate curriculum accommodations or modifications are in place, students can successfully participate in all curriculum even at beginning levels of English learning (page 37).

Let's Work Together!

Building English literacy skills takes time. Let's work together to help your child succeed.

Please contact the school if you have any questions (octavio.gallardo@tcdsb.org).
