What is copyright law?

  • Copyright laws protect the rights of authors, they are put in place to control original literary, artistic, musical, and dramatic works.

Fair Use Factors

  • Purpose of the use of the work, what do you plan to use it for? For example: commercial gain, educational, or personal purposes.
  • Nature of the work, is it more factual or creative
  • Proportions of the work used
  • Will the use of the copyright diminish its commercial value

The teach act

  • TEACH- Technology, Education, and Copyright Harmonization
  • designed primarily o address the acts of copyrighted works.

When can you use someone elses work?

  • when copyright has expired and the work is considered public domain
  • when permission has been granted by original owner
  • If the utilization of work fits Fair Use exemption
