What is Mononucleosis?

  • Mononucleosis (Mono) is an
  • infectious disease that causes you to
  • feel tired and sore. The symptoms may last for months.
  • It effects your spleen, lymph nodes
  • and salivary glands.

Symptoms

  • Sore throat and tonsils
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Jaundice (yellow skin and eyes)
  • Enlarged spleen
  • Headaches

SYMPTOMS CONTINUED

  • Chest pain
  • Skin rashes
  • Fever and chills

Treatment

  • There is no medicine yet developed to treat Mono
  • Non-medicinal treatment options include
  • Getting lots of rest
  • Avoiding sports
  • Gargling salt water to soothe your throat

Prevention

  • Avoiding close contact with infected people
  • (kissing and being sneezed on)
  • Having good hygiene (Washing your hands etc.)
  • Not sharing glasses, toothbrushes, food and eating utensils

Fun facts

  • Also called “Kissing Disease”
  • Most common in ages 15-25
  • Once you have been exposed to
  • the virus, it is with you forever.

  • Non lethal
  • Over 50% of children have been exposed
  • Over 90% of adults are carriers but,
  • most adults are immured to the virus
  • One of the most common infectious diseases
