Monsanto was among the first to genetically modify a plant cell, along with three academic teams, which was announced in 1983, and was among the first to conduct field trials of genetically modified organisms, which it did in 1987.

It now is a major supplier of GM seeds, crop sprays and fertilizers

Started as a partnership between John Francis Queeny and his wife Olga Monsanto

This was most likely the best decision at the time, as the couple were able to work effectively while merging their funds

Monsanto are now a Public limited Company (our group purchased shares in them for the stock market project)

THIS IS ADVANTAGEOUS AS:

• Gain more funds from shareholders
• There is limited liability for the shareholders
• The business has separate legal entity

Monsanto operates in 51 different countries throughout every continent

Monsanto are able to test out chemicals and agricultural techniques across a variety of different environments

In most cases this is not beneficial for the host countries, as they mainly send their skilled experts over to their international research centers instead of hiring inexperienced locals

On top of this they damage and poison fertile soil, as well as have land feuds with natives, often stealing acres of land by force
