THE GOLD RUSH BEGINS

  • First gold rush started in California in 1848
  • Gold was first discovered in early 1850s in Deer Lodge Valley
  • Brothers Granville and James Stuart found gold as well
  • This discovery was the fuse to the gold rush in MT
  • Many people flooded to Montana for the gold

GRASSHOPPER CREEK

  • 1862 - prospector John White and his partner find gold
  • The creek was named after the abundance of grasshoppers
  • Soon miners claimed the entire length of Grasshopper Creek
  • The creek produced $5 million in its first year
  • The city of Bannack was made around Grasshopper Creek

  • May 1863 - people began to explore on Crow territory,
