PRESENTATION OUTLINE

MONTE CARLO

BY MALAIKA GHANCHI 12A

Monaco is a tiny and extremely wealthy country, lying in southern France, where it is actually the world's second smallest, after only the Vatican City in Rome. Monte Carlo is the most prominent and popular area of Monaco and serves as the capital, while other important districts include the Old City (Monaco Ville), La Condamine, the industrial area of Fontvieille, and the beachfront suburb of Larvotto.

GRAND CASINO
Also known as the Casino de Paris, the Grand Casino is one of the city's most architecturally beautiful constructions and tourist attractions. The ornate interior of the Grand Casino makes it worth a visit, regardless of whether you plan to indulge in a game of roulette or not, and its gold and marble details ooze with affluence. Drawing gamblers and curious visitors alike, this glamorous casino is the ideal place to watch vast amounts of money and chips change hands. Also onsite and displayed in a glass case is an impressive €500,000 chip.

LARVOTTO BEACH
Monte Carlo's only public beach doesn't draw the fashionable crowds that its private counterpart, Le Beach, does but it is a good alternative with its soft sands and water sports. Backed by high-rise condominiums, the manmade beach gets busy in peak season so arrive early if you want to hire a deck chair and an umbrella.

AVENUE SAINT MARTIN
A stroll along this world-famous avenue will reveal outstanding cliff-side gardens perfect for relaxing. Also on the Avenue Saint Martin is the 19th-century Monaco Cathedral, the burial site of Princess Grace and many other Grimaldis.

WEATHER
Monaco's glorious climate, favoured by the famous for over a century, means that there isn't a "bad" time to visit. July and August will see temperatures cruise above 30C, and coupled with the huge crowds of tourists this can be an uncomfortable time to visit. Spring and Autumn are arguably the perfect times to go, warm enough to visit the beach but outside peak season. Even in winter, when temperatures will struggle to fall below 10, it's mild enough to walk around in light(ish) clothing.

CULTURE AND FESTIVITIES
Monaco is a land of culture and creativity, with the major religion following of Roman Catholicism. Monte Carlo's symphony orchestra, opera and ballet companies, theatre and avant-garde facilities, the Principality has built an excellent reputation.
